MEDDIC is six letters, MEDDPICC is eight, MEDDPICCC is nine, and most enterprise teams that say "we run MEDDIC" actually run MEDDPICC. Where the Lineage Actually Starts
MEDDIC originated at Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) during a stretch when Dick Dunkel and Jack Napoli scaled PTC's revenue from roughly $300M to over $1B. The framework was internal at first, codifying what their best reps already did. It became public training material after Napoli left PTC and built Force Management, which still teaches the methodology today.
MEDDIC has six elements: Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, Champion. Each one answers a question reps already need answered to forecast a deal honestly. MEDDPICC came later as Force Management's commercial refinement. It added Paper Process (legal, procurement, security, InfoSec review) and Competition (named alternatives the buyer is evaluating, including the status quo). Both additions reflect what changed in enterprise SaaS between 1995 and 2010, procurement got harder and the status quo got smarter.
MEDDPICCC adds a second C for Champion Coaching. Where the original Champion letter only asked "do you have one," MEDDPICCC asks "what are you doing weekly to make that Champion more effective at selling on your behalf."

Reading the table: MEDDPICC is MEDDIC with two adds. MEDDPICCC is MEDDPICC with one add. There is no version where the letters mean different things; the letters are stable and the variants are additive.
When MEDDIC (Pure) Is Enough
Pure MEDDIC fits two specific situations. First, training. New reps drowning in acronyms learn the six-letter version faster, and the missing letters can be added later. Second, motions where procurement and competition are not material; founder-led sales, internal IT to internal IT, or deals where the buyer is also the budget owner with no committee.
The honest answer is that pure MEDDIC is rare in 2026 sales training. Most "MEDDIC" enablement decks teach Paper Process and Competition under the MEDDIC label without renaming the framework. If you read job descriptions that say "MEDDIC required," they almost always mean MEDDPICC.
When MEDDPICC Earns Its Letters
MEDDPICC is the default for enterprise SaaS and any motion where one or both of these are true: the buyer's procurement adds weeks or months between verbal commitment and signed contract, or the competitive landscape includes a credible incumbent (including the status quo). The two added letters handle the two biggest reasons reps mis-forecast late stage.
Paper Process forces the rep to map legal review, security questionnaires (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA), procurement RFP cycles, redlines, signature authority, and PO issuance. Competition forces the rep to name alternatives explicitly. Most lost deals are lost to "no decision" (the status quo wins) more than to a named competitor. Reps who treat "no other vendors" as a green flag get blindsided by inertia.
When MEDDPICCC Earns the Extra C
MEDDPICCC adds Champion Coaching as a discipline. The framework holds that Champion identification (the original C) is half the work; the other half is making the Champion competent at selling internally. Reps practicing MEDDPICCC schedule explicit Champion prep sessions, share talk tracks, rehearse the Champion's pitch to the Economic Buyer, and equip them with objection responses for known internal blockers.
The variant fits mature enterprise orgs where deals routinely involve six to twelve stakeholders, internal politics matter as much as product fit, and Champions need preparation to survive committee. It is overkill for mid-market motions where the Champion and Economic Buyer are the same person.
How to Choose For Your Team
Three questions decide which variant fits.
First, what is your average deal cycle? Under 30 days, run MEDDIC or lighter (BANT often suffices). 30 to 90 days, MEDDPICC. Over 90 days with committee buying, MEDDPICCC.
Second, where do deals slip? If procurement and security review surprise you, you need Paper Process. If you lose to the status quo more than to named competitors, you need Competition. If your Champions go quiet between calls, you need Champion Coaching.
Third, how much enablement budget do you have? MEDDPICC has the deepest training market (Force Management, MEDDICC, Winning by Design, internal corporate trainers). What Most Teams Actually Run
In practice, most teams that claim MEDDIC run MEDDPICC, and most teams that claim MEDDPICC quietly do partial Champion Coaching when the deal is large enough. The labels are looser than enablement decks suggest. What matters is whether every active deal has real (not guessed) answers to every letter the team commits to.
The drill matters more than the acronym. A team that runs MEDDIC with weekly deal reviews where reps surface gaps will out-execute a team that runs MEDDPICCC as a CRM checkbox.
Drill the Framework, Not the Acronym
