Commission Structures Explained

Flat rate commission is the simplest model. You earn the same percentage on every dollar of revenue you close. If your rate is 10% and you close $100,000, you earn $10,000 in commission.

Tiered commission increases your rate as you hit milestones. For example, 8% on the first $50,000, 10% on the next $50,000, and 12% on everything above $100,000. This rewards reps who push past quota.

Accelerators multiply your commission rate once you exceed quota. If your standard rate is 10% and your accelerator kicks in at 100% of quota at 1.5x, you earn 15% on every dollar above quota. Some plans also include decelerators below a certain threshold.

The calculator handles all three structures and shows you exactly where each tier kicks in.

Why Knowing Your Numbers Matters

Understanding your comp plan isn't just about money — it changes how you sell:

  • Prioritize deals strategically. When you know exactly how much each deal is worth in commission, you can focus energy on the opportunities that move your earnings the most.
  • Forecast your income. Pipeline isn't just a management metric. Knowing your projected payout helps you plan personal finances with confidence.
  • Negotiate better. When evaluating a new role, modeling different comp plans helps you compare offers beyond base salary.
  • Stay motivated through the quarter. Seeing how close you are to the next tier or accelerator creates natural urgency.
